Eltham Easter Camp '08

Last weekend I again had the privilege of leading the team at Eltham Easter Camp 2008. This was my second year heading up the cross-denominational Eltham Easter Camp team. Once again I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have been part of something so special. My chief responsibilities were to look after the leadership team, ensuring a the timetable ran in an orderly and godly manner, b every aspect of camp ministry was taken care of, and c every person was adequately prepared for their work.

4:41 PM Monday, March 24, 2008 Dark Church Snow today - quiet outside the Church in the snowy sludge. Good Friday had a crowded Market outside - our church is set in an open market place. It is Easter Sunday and it was dark in church. We all received a candle as we entered. Later it became light as the single flame was passed around and the space became light ....... Divine Mercy is the Cure!

Pope John Paul II often reminded us of the loss of a sense of sin and the need for a return to the practice of frequent confession. The moral relativism that is causing much of this loss of a sense of sin in our world has also been characterized by our current Pope, Benedict XVI, as perhaps the major evil facing the Catholic Church today. snip The word ???epidemic??? would seem to be the very best way to describe the crisis in the Church today. We know that only about 25% of Catholics

SYMBOLIC SATURDAY - JUST A CROSIER WALK WITH THEE

So the bishop is coming to your parish and at the mass you notice he carries a large staff that resembles a shepherd??s staff and from time to time picks it up and sets it down. It is obvious that it has something to do with his position so what exactly is this staff? Through all of history it seems that many leaders hold something to show their leadership. It might be a club, or orb, or scepter. Is it not comforting that the choice of those in leadership position in the Church from the earliest

Low, White, Octave of Easter, Dominica in albis, St. Thomas, Whitsunday

Low, White, Octave of Easter, Dominica in albis, St. Thomas, Whitsunday Those are all names for this coming Sunday in the church year, the Sunday after Easter. It is a fascinating day. A big "let down" Sunday following Easter yet the readings and customs surrounding the day make it one of great pastoral and theological significance. How do we live post Easter lives? Where is Christ now that he has risen? Where and how can we find him? How do Christians who live a life of ongoing sinning g

PopeTrip'08: The Lost Prefaces

With the Popemobile already en route and 18 days to go 'til the Volo Papale goes wheels-down in DC, most of us have come across some very authoritative pronouncements of late enlightening the masses as to "Who Benedict Is" or "What The Pope Will Say" on the impending trip. No question, this has told us many things. First, it's indicated that the interest in the coming visit has been very wide the media coverage, very fair, even very positive... and that the burgeoning cottage industry of eccle

Easter Joy.....

Easter Joy..... Seems to have alluded me this year. Maybe it's the fact that Easter was "too early" and it still feels like freezing winter. Certainly not like a beautiful renewal of spring. Except for the Church that is....the smell of all the flowers has now permeated the Church. Even downstairs in the basement where I work can be found the light fragrance of the Easter Lilies upstairs. And after todays funeral with all the incenese....the beautiful combination of the two seemed very holy.

Tuesday of Pascha Proper of the Mass Those of you who follow the preaching of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, will have noticed how consistently he comments on the Proper of the Mass. The Proper of the Mass ?? the Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Sequence when there is one, Offertory, and Communion ?? are those chants, drawn principally from Sacred Scripture, that form the context for the other variable elements of every Mass: the Collect, Prayer Over the Gifts, Postcommunion Prayer and, of cour

Many have asked me: Why go to Mass at a openly dissident parish? Why go to Mass at a parish where everything is not just perfect? Why not just leave them alone? Why be with them? If you are going to ask questions like that why not ask: Why bother correcting errors spouted by your Catholic brothers and sisters? Why bother writing letters when the press gets our Faith all wrong? Why bother objecting when a local university stages a blasphemous play? Why stand up for life outside an abortion c

Something about Divine Mercy Sunday...

... reminded me of a letter I'd written in grad school to the student newspaper. Someone had written a column about Catholicism that suggested that being Catholic was about earning the requisite number of "heaven points" by attending so many Masses, or saying so many prayers, or helping so many old ladies across the street. It was a silly caricature, but one, it seemed, this columnist took

Singing God??s Word

I came across this wonderful Hymn today by Howard Sloan. It??s very faithful to the text of 1 Peter 1:3-9. That portion of Scripture is one of my favorite sections in all of God??s word and now I have the pleasure of not only reading it, but singing it. I love a good number of hymns, but I love, even more, singing God??s Word. It??s a great sadness to me that God??s Word is not sung more in C21st churches. Even more perplexing is so-called Reformed churches that do not sing the Psalms. I think one
